About The New Nature Foundation: Rebecca Goldstone and Michael Stern grew up around Philadelphia. They are highschool sweethearts who attended Akiba together, where they were instilled with a strong sense of Tikkun Olam. Their first trip to Uganda was in college, to conduct research on the jumping habits of monkeys. It was then they learned that more than 95% of people in Uganda use biomass (firewood or charcoal) as their only source of energy. As the human population has grown, gathering firewood and producing charcoal has become unsustainable. By the early 2000s, thousands of endangered species were at risk due to small-scale logging, while people struggled to meet their daily needs. Rebecca and Michael founded the New Nature Foundation (newnaturefoundation.org) to conserve wild animals and wild places through education, empowerment, and an emphasis on creative solutions that promote people living in harmony with nature. This talk will give an overview of how community partnerships, celebrating nature and making conservation FUN have saved hundreds of millions of pounds of firewood over the past 18 years.
